This is quite a difficult question to answer because the symptoms of insomnia can differ from one person to another. The common denominator in all of these cases is the difficulty in sleeping. Some insomniacs, for instance, may toss and turn on their beds for hours before they can sleep. This can be so frustrating for the ordinary person, you know. Imagine yourself tossing and turning on your bed for hours and hours before sleep sets in. Imagine just how cranky and grouchy you can be the very next day.
Other insomniacs also experience reversed sleeping patterns. This type of insomniac finds it very hard to stay awake during daytime. The insomniac does take naps during the day, but they still have trouble getting sleep of good quality during the night.
But just because you do not get the recommended number of hours of sleep does not really mean that you are already suffering from insomnia. The main thing to remember here is that you should feel well-rested in spite of having just a few hours of sleep. Not only should you feel well-rested, you should also be able to function very well. If this is the case, then you are not suffering from insomnia at all.
What’s more, as we grow older, we actually need less hours of sleep to function well. The recommended number of hours of sleep would amount to eight or nine. But as we grow older, we actually find ourselves still able to function well with just five to seven hours of sleep. The underlying concept to remember here is still what has been mentioned above. Feeling well-rested is still important here.
